This exercise will serve as an opportunity for school / school district administrators, safety and emergency management staff to work through scenario information and injects dealing with activating your school’s internal and external emergency notification system including Social Media.

This exercise is comprised of three scenario vignettes. The objective of the exercise is for participants:

  • To determine whether or not to issue an internal and / or external Emergency Alert based on the scenario and current procedures.
  • To determine the kind of information that should be included in the Emergency Alert when issued.
  • Determine the appropriate use of Social Media as part of the Emergency Alert.

Exercise Scenarios

Active Shooter Vignette

It’s a quiet Tuesday afternoon during the middle of the spring term. There are no special events occurring at school and it is a pleasant, sunny day.

At 1:22PM staff members in the school’s administrative office hear what they believe are several gun shots echoing down the school’s main hallway.

Building Fire Vignette

It’s 11:34AM on a Thursday and students and teachers are in the middle of classes.

Suddenly a fire alarm is activated and students, teachers and staff members are seen evacuating the building.

Hazardous Materials Vignette

It is early Friday morning when a tanker truck transporting chlorine overturns and begins to release a toxic cloud up-wind from the school.

Within a few minutes of the incident the school’s administrative office is notified by the fire department of the threat and advises the school to Shelter In Place.

Exercise Participation Information

There is NO CHARGE to participate in this unique exercise; however space is limited to the first 20 schools or school districts submitting an Information Request Form.
For information about participating in this exercise please complete an Information Request Form. Upon completing the form you will be contacted and provided with additional information.
Once your school or school district is approved it will appear on the list of participating schools and school districts.

* Everyone who will be participating in the exercise must register for the following reasons:
  1. Prior to the exercise important Read Ahead materials will be e-mailed to all registered participants. These materials are important to ensure your participation in the exercise is successful.
  2. At the end of the exercise only registered participants will be able to complete and submit their individual exercise evaluation (Hotwash).
  3. Only registered participants will be able to access and print their Certificate of Participation once they have submitted their individual exercise evaluation.
