This exercise served as an opportunity for the staff and management of Florida’s Washington County Health Department to assess their ability to establish and manage the county’s Point of Dispensing (POD) sites in response to an influenza pandemic.
The primary purpose of this exercise was to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the department’s Point of Dispensing (POD) Plan via a series of informational scenarios and injects. These scenarios and injects will deal with subjects such as the monitoring local health concerns then establishing, managing and demobilizing the county’s POD.
An outbreak of unusually severe respiratory illness is identified in a small village in southern China. Over the next 45 to 60 days the outbreak becomes a devastating Phase 6 Influenza Pandemic effecting communities throughout the United States.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) release the antiviral drugs contained within the Strategic National Stockpile.
The Operation POD Squad Exercise was held on the morning of October 25, 2012, at the Washington County Health Department in Chipley Florida.
This exercise is an example of the kind of exercises that comprise the nationwide Caduceus Shield Exercise Initiative. This initiative provides meaningful exercise opportunities for America’s health system.
