Exercise Benefits / Facts
This Functional Exercise provided an opportunity to coordinate on-scene incident management and EOC management of the City of West Fargo and the surrounding community during an intentional train derailment with hazardous materials release.
During this exercise, first responders and community partners worked together as a unified team to meet the challenges associated with a train derailment and hazardous materials spill in the community.
An eastbound train of 125 tank cars traveling 45 mph derails near the Magellan Pipeline Terminal in West Fargo. The train is transporting sweet crude oil. The three lead engines leave the tracks as well as the next eighteen cars immediately behind the engines. Several tank cars are leaking from their fittings or are punctured. A fire has broken out in the engines and is quickly spreading to the first set of tank cars.
The West Fargo Funnel Exercise was held in the afternoon of September 10, 2013, at locations throughout the county.
