Exercise Scenario

A University Biology major, who works for the University’s Dining Services, walks into the University’s Health Services Clinic with a fever, severe diarrhea, malaise, anorexia and abdominal pain. He is immediately examined by one of the clinic’s Nurse Practitioners.

During the examination the Nurse Practitioner learns that one of the student’s responsibilities at the University’s Dining Services is to prep salad bar vegetables. He also helped prepare the ingredients used during the “World’s Largest Sushi Roll” event. The student acknowledges that for the past two days he has been feeling sick but had to work due to financial obligations.

Suspecting the student may have Hepatitis A the Nurse Practitioner collects a blood sample for testing.

Due to the severity of his condition the student is sent to the hospital for an overnight stay while awaiting test results.
