The Volusia County Division of Emergency Management undertook an initiative to conduct a hospital workplace violence awareness and prevention exercise designed to provide Bert Fish Medical Center employees with the opportunity to assess current plans while gaining additional knowledge as to how to recognize and prevent workplace violence.

This exercise served as an opportunity for hospital management and staff to work through scenario information and injects dealing with four separate workplace violence scenarios.

Exercise Scenarios

This exercise was comprised of the following four scenario vignettes.

Patient Stalking Vignette

Stalking of a hospital patient by a member of the patient’s family.

Potential Active Shooter Vignette

Potential of an active shooter incident occurring within the hospital’s Emergency Department.

Threatening Individual Vignette

Ominous looking individual enters the hospital’s main entrance who then begins to make loud threatening statements.

Hospital Employee Firing Vignette

A recently terminated hospital employee threatens to seek revenge on his former boss.

Hospital – Workplace Violence Awareness Video

Access an awareness video to better understand the potential of workplace violence occurring within a hospital.

Exercise Conclusion

The Infirmary Intimidation Exercise was conducted on November 18, 2015, at Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach Florida.
