Exercise Benefits / Facts
The Ohio Department of Health undertook an initiative to design, conduct and evaluate an exercise entitled “Gastro Gambit – An Environmental Health Exercise”.
This exercise served as an opportunity for the staff and management of Ohio’s local health departments to work through scenario information and injects dealing with a food-related human health incident occurring within their region.
During this exercise participants worked together as a unified team of professionals:
- To respond to an urgent and complex food contamination incident.
- To map the process and flow of a foodborne disease investigation.
Students and their families become ill following their participation in Lincoln Elementary School’s Annual End of School Awards Banquet held at a local restaurant.
An Exercise Briefing video was produced to ensure that teams and individual team members were ready to successfully partake in the exercise. This video provided valuable information regarding preparing for and participating in the exercise.

The Gastro Gambit Functional Exercise was held on May 2, 2013, at each of Ohio’s County Health Departments.
This exercise is an example of the kind of exercises that comprise the nationwide Caduceus Shield Exercise Initiative. This initiative provides meaningful exercise opportunities for America’s health system.
