St George ACE Functional Exercise

Exercise Overview

Exercise Benefits / Facts

The Utah Department of Health undertook an initiative to facilitate a PIO tabletop exercise entitled “Saint George ACE”.

This PIO exercise provided an opportunity for PIOs to coordinate Joint Information System / Joint Information Center elements during a plane crash mass casualty / mass fatality event in the region.

During this exercise, Public Information Officers (PIOs) worked together as a unified team to meet the challenges associated with communicating to the public, media and victims’ families regarding a plane crash in the community.

Exercise Scenario

A Royal Airlines plane carrying 152 passengers and a crew of five is directed by air traffic control to perform an emergency landing at the St. George Airport after the pilot reports engine trouble en route from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles.

As the plane approached runway 1 from the southwest, the landing gear failed to engage and crashed resulting in 97 fatalities and 60 people injured.

Exercise Conclusion

The Saint George ACE Exercise was conducted on April 19, 2013, in St George Utah.
